Room 11 is actively taking part in the Walking Curriculum developed by Dr. Gillian Judson. The walking curriculum is important to room 11 because it gets us outside and walking does so much good for our bodies and our minds! It also encourages us to re-connect with our community and find a new way to be active at school. Our winter walks have been extra special because they have been when the snow is falling and there’s nothing quite as magical as freshly fallen snow! Sticky for making snow people and beautiful to watch as it hangs on the tree branches and exterior of homes.
The students have been excited to walk past their homes to show us where they live as well as pointing out the homes of their cousins, friends, and neighbors. As the students point out places in the community that have relevance to them, they will often share stories about the place based off of a positive memory they have with their friends and family. It has been a wonderful way for our classroom community to get to know each other in a different way, as we often only think of our friends as having lives “at school.” As a teacher, it has reminded me how rich and meaningful the lives of my students are when they are out in their community, it has been a unique gift!
